One of my new projects will focus on ‘writing lives’ by looking at the experiences of self-educated men and women before the mid-nineteenth century. I will focus on ‘upstarts’ from many humble walks of life, who longed to take pathways that were different from those of their parents. Whether or not society would permit them to do so will be answered by my work. 

The local post offices in both the US and Britain are under threat. I am currently preparing material for a history of the post office on BBC radio.
